What Is Classed as Green Waste?

Green waste is natural vegetation produced during routine garden maintenance and garden clearance. It consists of biodegradable plant material that can often be composted or processed into useful recycled products.

Although every council has its own collection policy, most accept similar types of garden waste.

Common Types of Green Waste

Green waste usually includes:

  • Grass cuttings.

  • Hedge trimmings.

  • Leaves.

  • Weeds.

  • Small branches and twigs.

  • Prunings from shrubs and bushes.

  • Flowers and plants.

  • Bark and small amounts of untreated wood.

These materials are produced during everyday gardening and are normally suitable for green waste collection.

What Isn't Green Waste?

Many items should not be placed in a green waste bin.

These commonly include:

  • Soil.

  • Rubble.

  • Stones.

  • Plastic bags.

  • Household rubbish.

  • Food waste.

  • Treated or painted timber.

  • Animal waste.

Placing unsuitable materials in the bin may result in it not being emptied.

Why Do Councils Have Rules?

Garden waste is usually taken away for composting or recycling.

Materials such as plastic, rubble or household waste can contaminate the recycling process, which is why councils ask residents to keep these items out of green waste bins.

As collection policies vary, it's always worth checking your local council's guidance.

What If I Have Too Much Green Waste?

Large hedge reductions, garden clearances and landscaping projects can quickly produce more green waste than a single wheelie bin can hold.

In these situations, a professional garden waste removal service can be a practical solution, removing the excess material and leaving your garden clean and tidy.
